The Best of Franz Lopez Photography

I started photography way back in 1999 before there were DSLRs and Librodo sharpening techniques or even online social sites like Facebook, Twitter, Flickr and Tumblr.

Ever since I got my very first camera, it has always been very sentimental to me. Why?

This is the very 1st camera I owned. a Canon EOS 1n

First of all my camera means a lot to me. Not only because it’s been with me for as long as I could remember but this simple mechanism, this old black piece of steel and hard plastic records my life as it happened. It has been through a lot. I know you can tell me, “Oh come on Franz, stop the drama, you know that you can always get a new one.” I know, but to tell you honestly, even if it doesnt work or doesn’t even turn on anymore, you would have to kill me before you get it from me.

Why did I pursue Photography? Well for me, like I said, it records life. I pursued photography because I wanted myself to have a timeline of life. That everything about me gets recorded. That when you see a single photograph you will remember. The joy, the pain, the sorrow, the sadness. The epiphany of emotions and history. And when the moment you start remembering comes, you will say: “This was me, this was us.” at that certain point in time, we existed.

Why did civilizations have hieroglyphics, illustrations, symbols and books? Why did famous people have statues and memorabilia? It’s because they wanted to have a manifesto. They wanted to remember, and at the same time to be remembered. Maybe that’s what my quest in the world is.

Do I think I’m good at what I do?

Well we can say that we’re good at what we do if we know our craft. If we love it and we’re passionate about it. Let’s just say that im doing my best at what I am doing, I’m not an expert but im trying my best to pursure this passion because I love it and it means a lot to me.

The focus has always been art. I can probably say that I’m an artist and by being an artist means honing a form which can be vague but can be organized. I guess photography falls under “My 1st love.” Everybody has their so called “1st love” right? It can be a person, it can be anything. But for me when it comes to art, photography has got to be on the top of the list.

In life, people do a lot of things (just like art). Every day, every minute, in every bit of a second we get busy. But at the end of the day we come home and rest. My resting place has got to be photography.

So the past 13 years has been a real roller coaster ride. Me and my camera, we’ve been through places, met people and been witness to the country’s history as it unfolded. Nothing can withstand the memories I share with this black piece of steel and hard plastic.

One of the most memorable Travel documentation  I had was this shoot in Ilocos

One photo that I can never forget was this shot during the 100 years of lasalle this was when I got a comment from Sir Joel H. Garcia. It was indeed an honor to hear from the famous event photographer himself.
