SOCIAL GOOD SUMMIT 2012 Coverage

SOCIAL GOOD SUMMIT 2012 Coverage

September 22, 2012 | Asian Institute of Management, Fuller Hall

Last September 22, 2012, a number of students, bloggers & social media advocates converged in the recently concluded Social Media Summit held simultaneously with a parallel event held in New York.

The event was organized by Rappler, Tweetup MNL and Mashable, entities known for promoting social media awareness. The event was held at the Asian Institue of Management.

The Event was hosted by the TV host Tim Yap together with Rappler’s Chay Hofileña.

Rappler CEO Maria Ressa talked about social media’s involvement in Rappler’s news gathering and news reporting. Ressa cited Rappler’s revolutionary creation “Mood Meter”  as a tool that echoes public perception on national events.

Bianca Gonzales, a famous TV host and online celebrity, talked about her personal take on social media awareness and involvement.

Christopher Lao, the original “I should have been informed” guy, talked about cyber bullying and its effect on his life.

Secretary Ricky Carandang, head of the Presidential Communications Development and Strategic Planning Office (PCDSPO) talked about the government’s effort in promulgating efforts with the use of a social media platform in the government.

Secretary Ramon Jimenez Jr., Minister of the Department of Tourism, talked about how media has evolved and how social media took part in the “It’s more fun in the Philippines campaign.”

The event was truly inspiring. Through the ages, from the analog telephone to the world wide web, we have always been seeking communication with others.

The entrance of Social Media as a communication device has only begun and the way we communicate continues to be reinvented. The only question is, with recent plagiarism issues and the development of the new Cybercrime Bill, would we be able to protect information passed through Social Media in the future?
